The “America’s Got Talent” 2018 season is going strong and it’s safe to say that this is some of the toughest competition that the show has ever seen. There have been dance groups, acrobats, magicians, daredevils, animal acts, and everything in between. Every episode has been filled to the brim with incredibly talented acts and of course, some not so talented acts that definitely add humor to the show.
While the competition is ultimately searching for an act that will win $1 million dollars and will be offered a show in Vegas, there are many different types of acts that may never have been seen in Vegas before. There are also some acts that may not do well anywhere but Vegas. Interestingly, though the show draws all kinds of entertainment from all over the world, the highlights this year seem to come from the singers.
I’m usually a fan of the stand-up comics, acrobats, and the clever magician and illusionist acts because they are the types of shows that I would pay to sit down and see. But, it seems that “America’s Got Talent” has become a great place for unknown singers to make a name for themselves. There are shows developed just for singers, but many seem to find a place here, where they aren’t just competing with other vocalists.
On “America’s Got Talent,” though the judges ultimately choose the finalists, it is America that gets to vote on the winner, using text messaging, phone calls, and the show’s app. Because of this, many of the contestants are first-time performers with amazing stories — these stories are what the audience is drawn in to. A singer that may not win on a singing show has a chance if they bring true passion and emotion to the stage. It is that emotional connection that many folks will vote for.
Makayla Phillips is a 15-year-old girl. She’s a regular teenager, but she has a very extraordinary talent. When she took the stage for her audition, she was obviously nervous. But, she pointed out the large group of people there to support her, took a deep breath, and belted out “Warrior” by Demi Lovato. It’s a powerful song and Makayla absolutely did it justice.
All of the judges were noticeably impressed, but none more so than Heidi Klum, who rewarded Makayla with a Golden Buzzer. Looks like we’ll be seeing her in the finals!
